As you pack up to move, it’s very easy to realize exactly how much stuff you own, and how much of that stuff you’re not willing to bring with you to your new home. As you set aside the things you want to leave behind, consider donating them to the variety of local Bentonville second-hand store options.
Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter
The Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter serves and houses children from throughout all of Arkansas, though the majority come from the Benton, Washington, Madison, and Carroll counties. The shelter has a Needs List of items they currently need and accept, which they update as needed. They accept clothes, house care items, toiletries, and even some food goods (unopen packages only). So if you are purging the pantry before your move, you may be able to donate that as well.
Local Thrift Stores
Thrift stores thrive on donations, and there are many throughout Benton county that would be happy to take what you are leaving behind. Habitat for Humanity has a ReStore location that accepts donations of home accessories, furniture, building materials, and appliances — though they can be selective in what they accept. You can also donate to the Helping Hands Thrift Store, Samaritan Shop, Goodwill, and many others.
Washington County Thrifts
If you’re willing to look a little further outside of Benton County, Washington County also offers The Attic, multiple Potter’s House locations, the Salvation Army, and more Goodwill locations.
Donating Pet Items
If you have pet care items to pass along, Bentonville Animal Services is always happy to accept gently used items. Perhaps you should skip the pre-chewed dog toys, but a pet bed, a crate, or a cat tree would not go amiss.
Non-Donatable Items
Unfortunately, there are some things that just can’t be donated: broken appliances, chemicals or waste, and of course all of the trash that appears out of nowhere when you’re prepping for a move. Luckily, we have recommendations for that too. Your broken or non-working appliances can go to Rogers Iron & Metal for recycling, and chemical or hazardous waste can be taken care of by Benton County itself. Just check the county’s site for any updates on where, when, and how to dispose of the waste.
