Favorite Moving Tools: Ratchet Tie-Downs & Bungee Cords

Using the right tools can make or break a move, so Little Guys Movers in Bryan/College Station definitely have our favorites. When it comes to securing belongings — in the moving truck or to each other — we love to use ratchet tie-downs and bungee cords.

Ratchet Tie-Downs

Ratchet straps, also called tie-down straps, are great for moving, because they are strong, durable, and adaptable. Ratchet straps are webbed straps with hooks on each end that use ratchet or winch mechanisms to pull them tight. The webbing allows the straps a degree of flexibility around whatever they are holding without losing any of the strength in their hold. The ratchets make tightening the straps easy, even if you aren’t strong, professional movers like we are, and also lock down the straps so they won’t loosen in transport. There’s also a large variety when it comes to ratchet straps. Even the mini straps have strength ratings up to 1,500 kgs, while the larger sizes will hold up to 10,000kgs, so you know everything in our moving trucks are held very securely in place.

Bungee Cords

Bungee cords, or bungee straps, are also very effective at holding pieces together or securing them in place. A bungee cord is made of many elastic strands woven together, then wrapped in cotton, polypropylene, or nylon, and they tend to be very elastic. You have likely seen this kind of cord more often. A bungee strap is made of a solid piece of rubber that has a hole at either end for hooks. These tend to be stronger rather than stretchier, and are used more for security rather than elasticity. Both have their uses when packing and anchoring your belongings for a move. When bundling things together — cords, tools, work equipment, etc. — or holding containers closed, bungee cords may be more effective. When loading the truck and making sure everything is stable, bungee straps might be more useful to attach items to the walls or each other. Fun fact: many long-haul truckers use bungees to make their cabs feel more like home by fastening things like coffee pots, crock pots, and microwaves to the walls, so you can see how strong and safe they are on home items.
