Community Partners: Hays County Food Bank and Turkeys Tackling Hunger

A Little Guys Movers moving truck transports hundreds of meals for Turkeys Tackling Hunger in Hays County.

Every year, Little Guys Movers in San Marcos takes part in Turkeys Tackling Hunger, a holiday food drive by Hays County Food Bank. Since 1984, the Hays County Food Bank has worked to alleviate hunger in our community. Over 30,000 people in Hays County are food insecure, and the Hays County Food Bank is working to reduce that number every day. We wanted to put a spotlight on this life-changing organization this holiday season, so we asked them a few questions about their upcoming drive, how they impact San Marcos, and what you can do to help.

What is Turkeys Tackling Hunger and how did it begin?

Turkeys Tackling Hunger is an initiative to combat food insecurity around the Thanksgiving season. This will be our 17th year distributing frozen turkeys and traditional sides to San Marcos, Kyle, Buda, and Wimberley. Our goal is to provide 1800 complete holiday meals free of charge to those who need it in our community.

In what other ways does the Hays County Food Bank provide for those in need?

We have four different food distributions weekly that our clients are able to attend. We also help with resource assistance, including signing up for SNAP benefits. We work with 24 different partners to help expand our reach, including San Marcos CISD, Hays CISD, Hays Caldwell Women’s Center, Southside Community Center, and the Salvation Army.

On average, we serve 7,000 individuals each month, or 1700 individuals a week, through our food donations.

In 2022, we served an incredible 153,598 people. Many of these individuals have no other source of groceries besides our free food distributions. These donations provide a lifeline to healthy, nutritious meals for families, veterans, and senior citizens.

How can someone get involved with your organization?

Your support is crucial this year as our donation numbers have decreased, as well as our volunteer numbers. To donate, visit haysfoodbank.org and click on the Donate button.

Through our bulk buying power, just $1 = 3 meals.
