Things to Know When Moving Out of State

Moving can be a big undertaking; even more so when you’re moving out of state or across the country. Here are just a few things to know that are unique to out of state moves:

Ask about relocation assistance.

If you are moving across the country or out of state for a new job, ask your employer if they offer relocation assistance. Many companies will help with moving expenses if they are requiring you to relocate!

Consider cost of living when budgeting.

You may be a budgeting expert, but everything can change when you move out of state. Research the cost of living in your new area, and make sure you alter your budget accordingly.

Make a “new state” to-do list.

Did you know that when you move to a new state, you have to get a new driver’s license? It sounds obvious, but it’s easy to forget! Write down everything you need to do within the first few weeks of your cross state move. Here are a few that may apply:

  • Get a new driver’s license
  • Register to vote in your state
  • Update any lenders, like student loan lenders
  • Forward your mail
  • Determine if your new county requires a pet license
  • Try to move early.

As much as movers try to stay on schedule, things happen. Weather delays can occur, cars or trucks can break down, and traffic is unfortunately still a thing. While good moving companies will have contingency plans for difficult situations, there are times when even the best movers can’t get to your new location on time. And the further you’re moving, the more opportunities there are for delays. The best way to avoid this problem is to move earlier than absolutely necessary. Try to set a moving date a week or two before you need to be there, and then any issues will be no big thing.

Choose a company with out-of-state moving experience.

Moving across the country is not the same as moving across town. When you’re planning your move, work with a company that knows what they’re doing. Might we recommend Little Guys Movers?
