A Little Advice: Hang In There

Tips For Moving Your Clothes

We know that moving is stressful. For some reason, residential moves can be especially daunting ﹘ things get personal. Over the years we’ve discovered lots of little tricks for packing and moving your belongings from one house to another. One thing we’ve noticed is that closets and drawers are often the last frontier of packing. You suddenly have more clothes than you ever remember owning. Don’t panic! We’ve got some ideas for moving clothes that beat taking everything off the hangers.

Use Suitcases and Drawers

Why make extra work for yourself? Avoid using more boxes than you need when you have perfectly good drawers! Keep your clothing items folded up in the drawers of your nightstands and dressers, and your movers can handle the rest. (We wrap mega rubber bands around large furniture pieces to keep drawers in their place.)

If you want to unpack the drawers, or if you have a pile of clothes without a home, dust off your suitcases and put them to good use. See? It’s not so bad.

Keep Nice Clothes Nice

Maybe you’re hanging on to some special-occasion clothing: costumes, wedding dresses, tuxedos. Items that need some extra love can be stored in special wardrobe boxes (which should be available at your local movers) or in garment bags for protection and ease of transport.

Stay Organized

Use rubber bands or hair ties to group hangers together. This will make everything simple to hang back up once you get to your new home.

Have a Change of Clothes Handy

Use backpacks or duffle bags to store at least one change of clothes, pajamas, and overnight stuff (toothbrushes, soap, etc.) for each family member. By the end of a long day of moving, you may not be ready to unpack all your clothes. Being prepared will keep you from stressing out more than you need to﹘take it from the professionals!
